The skin is the bodys single largest organ, covering us from head to toe. In this article we discuss four of the most common skin conditions suffered by people in order to discover their causes, symptoms and treatment options.

1. Acne

Acne is a common skin condition that afflicts people in their adolescent years, though for some the condition can continue into their 50s. The cause of acne is the blockage of oil producing skin glands by either excess skin tissue or a build-up of oil. The result of this blockage is a bulge in the skin topped by either a whitehead volcano of puss or a blackhead plug in the individual pores. Acne can also be caused by the rupture of skin follicles, which causes painful bacteria infections and swollen cysts.

The most common treatment for acne is a combination of different drying agents that cause some of the affected skin to peel away, revealing a new layer of clear new skin. In addition, the drying agents can reduce the overproduction of oil that may be clogging your pores. Often, these drying agents (salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, etc.) are used in conjunction with a light moisturizer that can help to counter and balance the dryness of your skin.

2. Skin Lesions, Scarring Pigmentation

A lesion can form on your skin when your acne is improperly treated or when the condition of the oil glands in your skin is very acute. Scarring or pigmentation (discoloration) can be the after-effect of acne lesions, leaving the skin with deep pits or contrasting colour marks that are considered unsightly by most. The key to avoiding tissue scarring caused by acne is early detection and treatment (as outlined above) of acne. If an individual is prone to scarring, they should contact their dermatologist or cosmetic physician as soon as possible to come up with a treatment program to minimize acne lesions and scarring. A chemical peel may also help to reduce the pigmentation and scarring after-effects of acne.

3. Psoriasis

Occurring primarily on the scalp but also found in other regions of the skin, this condition produces redness on the skin and silvery flakes of skin all over. Whether genetic mutations, environmental conditions or immune system malfunctions are at the root of psoriasis, the cause is an over activity of the T-helper cells in the body. These T-cells cause the skin cells to multiply at a fast rate of speed, stacking up too quickly, and one on top of the other. This overproduction of cells expedites the sloughing process of the skin, making it happen approximately every 6 days instead of every 30 days. The most common and effective medical treatment for psoriasis comes in the form of topical ointments that are applies to the affected area on a regular basis. These ointments typically contain salicylic acid or tar preparations. In addition, it is important that the skin is kept well moisturized, as dryness exacerbates the problem and many of the ointments contain drying agents that must be aggressively counter-acted through moisturizing regimens.

4. Eczema

Eczema is a condition that results in extremely itchy, cracked, scaly skin, which may blister severely over time. Some of the causes for this skin problem are allergies (food and environmental), genetic abnormalities and high levels of stress. Therefore, the first step in attempting to minimize this condition is to distress as much as possible. After this, you would be wise to search your diet, toiletry products, clothes washing products and other controllable and allergy producing elements in order to reduce irritation to the skin. Topical ointments can also be applied to the skin, much like with psoriasis, and humidifiers can be set up in the home to minimize the dryness of your skin, thereby reducing the visible symptoms of your condition.
