The low dosage of birth control pills can be effectively used in the treatment of acne. So, the next time, you are out to find a way to reduce pimples and acne, it might be a good idea to discuss your skin problems with your gynecologist instead of your dermatologist. This way, depending upon your lifestyle and medical history, you can effectively use birth control pills two solve two major problems simultaneously, with just one prescription.

bHow does the Birth Control Pills Work on Acne?/b
The production of the male hormone androgen in the body can also cause increased oil production, and it can be in a substantial quantity just before the menstruation starts. Various medical researches and reports have approved that low dosage birth control pills can substantially decrease the presence of excess androgens. This eventually control and decrease the breakouts of acne. The use of birth control pills is not new and for many women it is no surprise at all. When you start taking birth control pills, you will gradually notice an improvement in your skin.

bHow Appropriate is it for you to Take Birth-Control Pills to Control Acne?/b
Well, before you make a final decision regarding the intake of birth control pills to control acne, you must take into account certain factors. Actually, there are some risks associated with taking birth control pills. Though the chances are very low yet the risks are there. Some of the risks include increased chances of heart attack, strokes, blood clots, and breast cancer. Again, if you are a smoker, these risks can be further compounded. The more possible side effects include vaginal bleeding, fluid retention, dark-brown skin patches, and depression. It is obvious that it is not at all prudent to take birth control pills to control acne at the cost of all these risks. Still, if you are already using the pills for birth control and you are comfortable with that, this remedy is certainly worth your consideration. Last, but not the least, whatever, be the case, do consult your doctor before you go ahead with this remedy against acne.

bCommon components of the therapy for acne/b
Following are a few common components of therapy for acne.
b? ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES/b
Oral Contraceptives is a combination of estrogen and progestin taken orally. They are often prescribed for hormonal acne. Low doses of estrogen help suppress the androgens produced by the ovaries, and the newer progestin agents, including desogestrel and norgestimate, are less androgenic than those found in older formulations.

b? ANTI-ANDROGENS/b
Sometimes, you doctor may also prescribe an anti-androgen in combination with oral contraceptives. These drugs work by inhibiting androgen production in the ovaries and adrenal glands, and eventually help prevent existing androgens from causing excessive oil production.

b? CORTICOSTEROIDS/b
Small doses of corticosteroids, like prednisone or dexamethasone, may also curb inflammation and suppress the androgens produced by the adrenal glands.

Overall, taking low dosage birth control pills can be an effective and safe treatment for moderate acne. They are often prescribed for hormonal acne.

br
A fifteen year old female came to my office with a myriad of severe symptoms. She stated that school was overwhelming her. She was experiencing irregular periods, excessive hair growth as well as uncontrollable acne,
and was gaining lots of weight. She feared that she was on the verge of getting seriously sick. What could cause this array of symptoms?

Her mother knew that I would be able to release her daughters stress and hoped that in the process, her daughter would stop gaining weight and her skin would improve. In discussing the situation with the patient, she mentioned that her grandparents were living with the family. They were victims of hurricane Katrina. There was lots of stress at home and at school. My first priority was to alleviate her stress. I also suggested that the teenager be examined by a gynecologist. After three sessions with me, the young girl was feeling better emotionally but her menstruation, her skin, and her weight were still prominent issues.

The report came back from the gynecologist stating that the patient had Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and that surgery was recommended to remove the large cysts that had grown around her ovaries. Understandably, the patient and her mother were terrified by the necessity of surgery. Even more unnerving was the fact that it was recommended that the surgery be performed ASAP – within one months time. The gynecologist also prescribed birth control pills to help regulate the patients cycle. While it was good to have a diagnosis for her symptoms, the surgery recommendation seemed rushed.

In the interim, I suggested the patient take double the recommended daily dose of folic acid.I also gave her a holistic healing treatment to ensure that she would be able to optimally absorb the mineral, which I have found to be beneficial in preventing cysts and spinal defects.

The young girl continued coming once a week for a treatment session, mainly to release stress and anxiety. A month passed by quickly and the patient had an ultrasound to confirm the size of the cysts. To her astonishment, the doctor found that there were no cysts visible on the ultrasound scan. The doctor stated that surgery would no longer be necessary.

Was it the folic acid and holistic healing approach that eliminated the cysts, or the traditional birth control pills? Could it be that both factors were working together simultaneously? The answer is unknown. What is important is the patients improvement. Interestingly enough, the patients acne seemed to be visibly improved by the birth control medication. Now the patient is coming to see me for a holistic treatment once a month to minimize the stress experienced at home and at school.

br
The use of birth control pills to control acne flare ups may or may not be an effective.
Usually, the first signs of acne develop during adolescence, when hormone levels begin to rise. When hormone levels surge, the sebaceous glands located at the base of each hair follicle, produce excess oil. This oil combined with dead skin cells and dirt becomes trapped within the skins pores and acne develops.
Since acne can be triggered by fluctuating hormone levels within the body, it stands to reason that acne can appear at the various stages in life when hormone levels are changing such as puberty, pregnancy and menopause. It also makes sense that controlling hormone levels may help to reduce acne outbreaks.
The use of birth control pills for the treatment of acne is an attempt to regulate hormones. It is important to understand that every human body contains both male and female hormones. Overactive sebaceous glands are the result of rising levels of the male hormones – testosterone and androgens. Birth control pills contain artificial female hormones – estrogen and/or progestin. The theory is that birth control pills shut down the ovaries which are producing inappropriate male hormones allowing a more balanced male/female hormone mixture.
There are problems with using birth control pills to control acne. Some women may actually notice their acne worsen with the use of birth control pills until the estrogen levels become dominant.
Women who do take the birth control pill and who notice that their acne is getting worse should discuss the situation with their doctor. Different brands of oral contraception have different levels of hormones. Switching to another brand may bring acne back under control. There are several brands that may help clear up acne but only Ortho Tri-cyclen has been approved by the FDA for treating acne.
Keep in mind that using birth control pills for acne control is only a temporary solution. Many women find that once they stop using birth control pills, their acne returns – often worse than before.
Birth control pills can have undesirable side effects including nausea, weight gain, water retention and mood swings. There are also other more serious health risks than acne to consider. Prolonged use may increase your chances of heart attack or stroke.
It is for these reasons that using birth control pills for acne control should be considered only after all other treatment options have failed and always with the guidance of your physician.

Pimple treatment is just a term used to describe what is commonly known as acne. Apart from pimples, the other terms used to describe acne are zits and blemishes. So this is better defined so that we do not get confused when reading articles on these terms.

Pimple or acne treatment is in fact a very simple process of clearing the skin of an infection. Sebum is an oily substance that is produced by the sebaceous glands to lubricate the hair and the skin. Acne arises when the sebum coupled with dead cells and bacteria clogged the skin pores. As the plug grows, the skin then gets ruptured. When personal hygiene is sacrificed, infection sets in and gives rise to inflammation. So if you can grasp the principles right, treating acne can be very easy.

For stubborn acne that fails to respond to various treatments, one effective method is to use the oral contraceptive pills to reduce and then eliminate acne totally. The pill works by hampering the production of sebum thereby reducing the amount. So once the amount of sebum is lowered, chances of pimple eruptions will be less.

However, it must be emphasized that the pill only works to reduce the sebum and nothing else. Therefore it has to be used in combination with other medicated creams like benzoyl peroxide. You have to take the pills for several months before you see improvements.

However, you should consult your doctor before you embark on this type of treatment because birth control pills are not just for anyone. Unless otherwise necessary, the side effects of the pills can create complications.

Many young women who are looking for acne treatment and birth control methods tend to look for birth control pills to kill two birds with a stone. It might be surprising for some to know that some birth control pills are very effective in controlling acne and cure considerably in many cases. Birth control pills control the sebum significantly to be produced.

What is acne?
Acne is a chronic disorder of the hair follicles and sebaceous glands. Acne is characterized by black heads, pimple outbreaks, cysts, infected abscesses, and (sometimes) scarring. Acne is the result of inflammation of the sebaceous glands and hair follicles of the skin producing pimples and pustules.

Sebaceous glands (fatty glands found in hair follicles throughout the body that secrete oil into the hair and surrounding skin and they emit oil) found on many parts of the body which produce Sebum. When the production of sebum increases, it blocks the sebaceous glands, which makes sebum filling the gland into balloon shape. This is generally called as acne. If the production of sebum decreases so is the acne and vice-versa

How birth control pills work on acne?
Androgen are group hormones, also known as male hormones in the body are responsible for excess sebum production. Birth control pills control androgen hormones significantly. Androgen hormones’ activity in sebaceous glands either increases or decreases the production of sebum. When androgen hormones increases in sebaceous glands, its produces more sebum and so it appears in the form of acne. This activity is greatly observed in teenagers and young adults specially between the ages of 12 and 24, when they experience many physical changes.

However, it must be noted here that that there are mainly two types of birth control pills available. One is Progestin Only Pill (POP) and other is Combination Pill (having progestin and estrogen hormones). These combination birth control pills come in different combination level of progestin and estrogen hormones. The estrogens may be in the form of ethinyl etradiol. In fact, this is the ethinyl etradiol that controls the level of androgen hormones in the sebaceous glands.

In 1997, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved low-dose birth control pill Ortho Tri-cyclen to be used for acne treatment. It controls the production of androgen hormones in sebaceous glands and thus reduces acne to appear significantly.

Despite the fact that birth control pills work effectively on acne treatment, it is certainly not advisable for sexually inactive and teenagers to use them as the medium of acne treatment unless they consult their physician or doctor first.

The above article is for general information on possible acne treatment by birth control pills and should not be taken as medical advice. If it is so, please consult your doctor or physician for treatment purpose.

It would almost be shorter to list the things that birth control pills DON’T effect, then to mention all the things they DO effect. They don’t, for instance, effect vegetables, they don’t effect rocks, and they don’t effect outer space, however they may, on occasion, effect machinery and small animals.
Weather you’re taking them to even out your menstrual cycle or to keep yourself from getting pregnant, now you have yet another reason to try out birth control pills,… clear skin. Birth Control Pills have proven that they help reduce acne. So much so in fact that the FDA has approved Ortho Tri-Cyclen and generic norgestimate/ethinyl estradiol (the stuff in Birth Control Pills) for use in the treatment of acne.
How Does this work? Androgen is a male hormone that increases oil production. Androgen is always working away, but it increases it’s production of oil just before menstruation begins, which could result in your skin breaking out around you period. Where does “the pill” fit in? Low-doses of birth control pills have shown that they decrease these excess androgens. That means less oil and less breakouts, and they can even be used with other acne therapy (details can be found in the February 2001 Skin Therapy Letter)
Does this mean you should go out and pick up some birth control pills to kill that acne? Probly not, remember these studies were done with low doses of birth control pills. You might wanna think of it more as one of the things to add to the benefits of birth control pills. Maybe it’ll help offset the nausea and headaches over on the drawbacks side.

Causes of Acne

The following are the lead causes of pimples and acne:

Puberty and related changes (activation of sebaceous glands or the oil glands) Hormonal imbalance Dirt Skin types (oily skin is more prone to acne) Highly stressful lifestyle Vitamin and mineral deficiency Rare cases of heredity Cosmetics

Link between Birth Control Pills and Acne Demystified

Birth control pills are effective for acne treatment only in the cases where the main cause for acne is hormone related. Sometimes, an excess secretion of androgen from the ovaries is the leading cause of stubborn pimples and acne. Androgen has the property of activating the oil glands that leads to and increased occurrence of acne. Certain combination of birth control pills help by suppressing the level of androgen in the body. Testosterone (male hormone) is also associated with the increase in the activity of oil glands, thereby promoting acne. Oral contraceptives, especially those containing Estrogen and Progestin, reduce Testosterone in the body. Not all types of oral contraceptives are flatly effective on everyone. You need to decide upon the right combination suitable to your physiology. Of course, this has to be done under the guidance of a medical practitioner. In addition, other acne specific drugs, including antibiotics should be used as supplements to enhance the efficacy of the medication, for instance, benzoyl peroxide, alpha hydroxyl acids, and retinoids.

Preferred Combination and Commercially Available Products

Medicinal formulations containing the hormones Estrogen and Progestin (synthetically manufactured Progesterone) are usually beneficial in the therapy. Estrogen helps in maintaining the hormonal balance and regulates the level of Testosterone. Progestin is added to prevent any side effects caused by excess Estrogen. Lower Estrogen drugs such as Alesse should be preferred, as they do not have lesser repercussions related to the hormone. Ensure that the progestins in the medicine are anti-androgenic and not androgenic. Some of the commonly available brands are:

YAZ Ortho Tri-Cyclen Estrostep Yasmin

Birth Control Pills: Last Resort!

Oral contraceptives are resorted to only after exhausting all the other options, due to the reactions of hormone replacement therapy. If you do not intent to go in for contraception, use of birth control pills for acne treatment is a bad choice. The known side effects of oral contraceptive pills are:

Nausea Irregular menstrual cycles Cyst in the bust area Tendering of breasts Heart ailments Clotting of blood Cancer

While taking the risk of above side effects, you should be aware of the fact that oral contraceptive pills do not necessarily treat acne. Therefore, exercise a lot of prudence in adopting birth control pills for acne cure and try to keep it as last choice, rather than a preferred option.

By a former acne sufferer

I counsel plenty of acne sufferers. Some are extraordinarily successful right off the bat. And then some struggle in the beginning. Those that struggle Ive noticed share some commonalities.

Here are just a few of my observations of the pitfalls acne sufferers face and how not to make the same mistakes.

#1 Mistake: They see their skin as the problem and try to fix their skin…

Acne, all acne, be it adult acne or teenage acne is not a skin disease. Now, before you think Im going mad please hear me on this one…

The health of your skin is only an external reflexion of your internal health.

To cure your acne you must eternally abandon the notion that youll be able to apply a gel or cream on your skin that will solve the internal problem..

How do you fix the inner problem? We’ll get to that so stay tuned.

#2 Mistake: They dont know WITH EXACTNESS whats really the cause of their acne…

Some shout sugar causes acne. Others blame it on too much sex, or not enough sex, or birth control pills, or lack of birth control pills.

Then others say its bad diet or bad hygiene. While others say diet doesnt effect acne.

And a host of other ideas.

(By the way, all of them are wrong. None of them are the true cause of acne.)

And because they dont recognize WITH precision what the actual cause of acne is they try lots of futile ‘cures’, none of which ever addresses what’s really causing their acne.

The most important first step to curing your acne is to discover whats causing it.

#3 Mistake: If they ever do find out what is causing their acne they dont have an effective approach or procedure to correct the dilemma…

…Or they are absent a key piece to the puzzle thats stopping them from getting results.

So they give up…Only to jump for the next quick fix acne cream or acne fad… But they never fix the true cause of your acne.

They end up anguishing years and years when they dont have to.
Please listen to me…
…Your life is worth it. Take the time to understand whats causing acne and how to stop it. Trust me, getting this knowledge is the best use of your time.

But know who you are learning from…

…Most dont know what the real cause of acne is. Listen to those who are getting results who have cured their own acne and have helped other acne sufferers do the same.

You're not a child. You are 25, 30 or even 40 – So what with beads!? Were not they supposed to leave her prom? You are not alone – 50% of women suffer from acne adult female. What can you do? There are many products available in all the major cosmetics companies promising to help clear your acne adult but can not tell what is right for you unless you know what is causing your bad complexion first. The answer is usually androgen (male) created by ovarian hormones. But you're a woman! Well, we all have a certain amount of so-called male hormones, too. These hormones cause acne almost all through a complex process in which cause the dead skin cells to clog your pores from the inside. Acne is not a hygiene problem. In fact, the only thing that could wash would help to wash your mom and dad – who gave the genes probably determine their fate when it comes to acne. Since acne is caused by hormones, most of the causes of acne are adult women related to hormones: hormonal fluctuations. This is why most people get pimples during puberty, when hormone levels of the spike. In women, can get an outbreak once a month at a particular time of their menstrual cycle. Stop birth control pills. Since the estrogen found in birth control pills can help prevent acne and androgen hormones make annoying, when you stop taking the pill, acne may erupt. You will have to consider the pill or other methods. Other medications. Are you taking other medicines that can cause acne? anticonvulsants, corticosteroids, sobriety and drugs can cause acne. So can birth control pills containing progestin, not estrogen. You should talk to your doctor before stopping any of these medications, but your doctor that you may want a different formulation that does not strengthen their acne. Inheritance. Thanks Mom. If your mother, father and siblings once have had acne, it is likely that he inherited. Stress. 25 years ago, dermatologists did not insist that stress can cause acne. Well, wrong. Now we know that stress can and should increase production of androgen hormones. So relax. If you learn to manage your stress, you may be able to help your skin. Diet. Some foods, particularly milk can aggravate acne and even cause rashes. Try to track the foods you eat. If you notice your skin turn for the worse after eating a particular food, try cutting out of your diet. Products for skin care. If the products of skin care are the cause of acne is called acne cosmetic (as opposed to acne vulgaris, which is caused by hormones) This is caused by oil sunscreens and other products that obstruct the skin from the outside. If you have acne prone skin should only use products labeled non-comedogenic. Underlying condition. If you have other symptoms such as excess facial hair, baldness or thinning hair and irregular periods may be a more serious medical condition causing your acne. Consult a physician if you have any of these other symptoms. Now, you will probably have an idea about the cause of female adult acne. Adjust your treatment options accordingly. Ask yourself the next time they launched an acne treatment product if the product is to have an effect on their condition. Creams and lotions are probably not going to do much good if your acne is caused by hormones, but it sure can make your pocket lighter!
