Before we discuss the proper treatment for acne, we need to study how acne is created in the first place, so that we stop it before it has a chance to begin.

The Skin creates Sebum, which is oil secreted naturally in the hair follicles. It gets into the pores, where it provides lubrication and protection for the skin. Occasionally, too much sebum is trapped in the hair follicle. A blackhead or a whitehead results from a clogged pore. These pores allow the overgrowth of Propionibacterium, which causes the surrounding skin to form acne, this occurs when these bacteria inflame the hair follicle. This is the time to begin acne treatment.

Acne control:

A diet rich in seeds, nuts, fresh fruits and vegetables can help control acne. Drink enough water every day because, dehydrated skin can shed dead cells causing clogged pores. Most cosmetics contain chemicals that can aggravate acne. Use products that will not cause blackheads. Avoid stress, which lowers the hormones, which can increase the hormone level. Some milk products, red meat and fried foods may exaggerate acne. Tanning excessively and use of sun tan products can lead to blocked pores.

Listed below are some guidelines recommended by The American Academy of Dermatology to help you treat acne:

* Never squeeze or touch the acne pustules in any way. This can worsen the inflammatory process.

* Gently wash your face twice daily with a mild soap or one that contains sulfur. Gently, pat skin dry.

* Do not use oil- based products.

* Fried foods and even grease in the air often in take-out restaurants can irritate acne.

* Give acne products time to clear up the lesions. This can mean several weeks or even months.

* Some acne products increase the skin’s sensitivity to light. Wear a hat with a brim while in the sun and use sunscreen. Avoid tanning booths while using these products.

Treatment for Acne- Acne Cleansers

Acne Cleansers act as the first line of defense in the treatment for acne. They remove dirt and dead cells from the the skin, control oil accumulation, and remove beauty products such as make-up. There are a variety of skin cleansers, always use milder cleansers as a substitute for bathing soap. Most of the cleansers, some of which are shown below, are medicated and are excellent for various acne treatments.

1. PhytoMe: Gentle Cleansing Gel:
Ingredients include herbal extracts that remove dead skin cells, bacteria and excess sebum from the skin surface. Use it three times daily as a cleanser or make-up remover and gives a refreshed, clean feeling to your face.

2. Clarins One-Step Facial Cleanser:
This cleanser uses orange extract. It opens pores and keeps the skin cleaned and nourished, and is great for oily skin. It is an all-natural cleanser, toner and make-up remover.

3. Face Stockholm Foaming Facial Cleanser:
This facial wash clears up all make-up and bacteria with its foaming formula. Use it morning and night for a clean, refreshed feeling.

4. St. Ives Foaming Facial cleanser:
This product is entirely soap free and includes tea tree oil combined with chamomile extract to balance moisture, without drying the skin. This cleanser is excellent for removing facial make-up, oil and dirt.

5. Fira Foaming Tea Tree Facial Cleanser:
Tea tree oil has natural ingredients for controlling skin problems and bacteria. The penetrating action of the foam deep cleanses the skin, leaving it fresh and refreshed, with a better tone.

Are you finding it difficult to control your acne? Just how can you make those spots disappear? What makes them appear in the first place? We take a look at what causes your acne and how you may be able to prevent it.

Acne is usually formed around the tiny hair follicles that are on your face. Dead cells can block up these follicles and this can all lead to bacteria feeding on these dead cells and multiplying. This will cause that tiny hair follicle to start swelling and then infection will begin to spring forth. This will soon lead to that small red spot we dread seeing in the mirror!

Unfortunately, this process happens deep down inside your hair follicle, so if you see a surface acne treatment, then it can only do so much to help you! Actually, there are some acne remedies that employ rough chemicals or even abrasives. This can actually lead to your acne getting worse under such treatments.

So what can kindle acne to start producing? Well, there are periods in our lives that can incite acne, usually when our hormones are in overdrive. For the males, most problems will occur around puberty and then things should start easing up. As for the ladies, they can also have problems around puberty, but unfortunately for the girls, they can also experience problems with zits during menstruation and also pregnancy.

Extreme stress could initiate acne as well; your blood pressure will increase as will the oil that your face produces, so if youre getting ready for an exam, dont be surprised to see one or two spots appearing. New studies show that non-organic milk products could lead to your growth hormones soaring, this could cause acne. It may well be that a food allergy could be the cause of your problem, if you have any reason to think a particular food may be causing your problems with acne, then simply cut it out for a few weeks and see if theres any improvement.

Acne is always going to a predicament for many throughout puberty. However, look to get yourself on a quality acne treatment system, try and steer clear of refined sugars when you can. If none of the advice within this article is helping to clear up your acne, then its probably time to get some help from a dermatologist!/pbr

We’ve all experienced acne at one time or another. It’s a skin condition that can affect anyone, regardless of age or skin type. Some people get light acne occasionally, while others deal with severe outbreaks on a regular basis. No single treatment works for everyone, because every patient is different.

We’ve all wished for a magic potion to make acne disappear. The unfortunately reality is that there is no single proven method of curing acne. There are several underlying factors that contribute to an acne breakout. That’s why, for many patients, a combination of treatments can be the most effective means of controlling or combating this chronic skin condition.

Most people immediately turn to chemical and pharmaceutical acne treatments, when the root of the problem lies in their diet and daily hygiene. It’s true that medicated soaps and lotions do have some ability to clean away bacteria, but many users find these products too potent. Young users with sensitive skin are especially prone to the abrasive side effects of pharmaceuticals and chemicals. These products can actually cause further damage and irritation to the skin.

If you’re looking for a chemical-free treatment that’s kind to sensitive skin, you’ll be happy to know that there are alternatives available. Using natural remedies can help to have clearer, healthier, acne-free skin.

Herbal Treatments

If you want acne relief without the nasty side effects, try herbal remedies. You can find many products at your local health food store that provide chemical-free results. Don’t expect instant gratification, however, because even the best herbal remedies have their flaws. You may have to use natural solutions for a month or more before seeing positive results. Researching these products may also be frustrating, as relatively few studies have been taken to present their effectiveness. There is little scientific proof available to properly compare the benefits of herbal remedies to chemical or medical treatments.

Home-brewed Acne Remedies

Home remedies can provide affordable treatment alternatives to the pricier medicated options. Did your grandmother ever tell you that sleeping with cucumber slices on your forehead would help to clear your acne? It might be worth a try. As with herbal treatments, there is not a great deal of scientific research available to support these home-brewed claims. People who rely on home-based treatments do see some results with fewer side effects, although it can take longer for these remedies to take effect.

Natural Acne Treatments

Natural acne remedies can offer relief, but some treatments can take weeks before showing positive results. The benefit is that they can control acne without the damaging effects of chemicals and pharmaceutical medications. Unfortunately, most research is based on studies funded by the pharmaceutical companies, so the results of natural acne treatments are not always clearly presented.

Acne is a medical condition, so you may want to speak with your doctor or health practitioner to find the best treatment options for you. Just remember that you are not obligated to use harsh chemical or pharmaceutical treatments. Natural care, home remedies and herbal treatments are alternative acne treatments that may be beneficial to you.

It is inconveniencing and sometimes disgusting to be under acne, wrinkles, or spots attacks, because they deny us the natural beauty we desire to have with our top skin layer. In addition, acne or other forms of skin attack are regarded as a health concern and cannot be overlooked. This is why every individual who has any of these attacks must look for treatment no matter the cost. For acne, the treatment may be reduced to just getting retinoic acid of the Differin, Tazarac and Retin-A types into your system. There are very many products that can supply these retinoic acids

Acne is an extremely common skin affliction affecting around 85% of teenagers and young adults as well as a significant proportion of adults.

With a plethora of acne information available, it may also be difficult to establish what is the right treatment and/or medication. In a previous article I suggested that as all of us are individuals, it is likely so to will the treatment for each person’s acne.

Let’s delve a bit further into treatments and medication. In the case of mild or even slightly worse acne, a good preventative and treatment regime if rigorously followed is often found to control the affliction.

However there are obviously sufferers with severe acne where over the counter or non prescription treatments have not had the desired impact. Whilst I would suggest in this instance finding a reputable dermatologist you will likely find that an acne treatment regime still has a place in assisting the overall treatment.

It would be extremely advisable for those prescribed medications for the more severe acne affliction to carefully research the medication prior to commencing. The clear example of this is the medication for “recalcitrant modular acne” being Isotretinoin (marketed as Accutane, Amnesteem, Claravis & Sotret). The US Food and Drug Administration provides significant information in relation to this particular drug however in short it is known to cause birth defects and is being examined in relation to reports of suicide or suicidal thoughts associated with the use of the drug.

A Risk Management program called iPLEDGE in relation to this drug is in place with information and updates available.

The program is ensuring adequate controls are in place in relation to the use of this drug and the important message is “Do not purchase this drug over the internet”.

There are a range of prescribed medications available with those applied to the skin for more mild to moderate cases and oral medications for more severe.

Some of these include:

? Oral antibiotics
? Oral contraceptives
? Azelaic Acid
? Benzoyl peroxide
? Clindamycin
? Erythromycin
? Sodium sulfacetamide
? Tazarotene
? Tretinoin
? Adapalene

The message is still however to do the appropriate research as information on some drugs may change significantly over time.

Summary
Whilst medications are vital in the treatment of a significant number of conditions aside from acne, it is always wise to research the medication to allow a balanced approach or weighing up the benefits prior to commencing.

This is obviously extremely clear in the case of the drug Isotretinoin for severe acne.

In the last article we learned about Isotretinoin. Let us find out more about what other treatment options are available for cysts and nodules. Oral Antibiotics- Antibiotics are used topically as well as orally. For severe acne oral antibiotics are used as they produce quicker results. Broad-spectrum antibiotics kill the bacteria P.acnes. With reduction in the population of this bacterium, infection and inflammation reduces. Tetracycline, erythromycin and doxycycline are commonly used antibiotics. Excessive use of antibiotics can cause resistance to the antibiotic and gastro intestinal problems. Corticosteroids – In this treatment, a mild steroid solution is injected in the cyst. The steroid dries the acne within a few days. This treatment may prevent scarring as it reduces the infection quickly. Surgical procedure- The lesion is surgically cut and drained. This procedure needs skill and patients should not try this themselves. Popping a cyst can lead to more infection. After draining the cuyst local application of antibiotics heals the lesion. Oral Contraceptives- In women the hormonal activity can be corrected with oral contraceptives. Hormones are responsible for overactive sebaceous glands. These glands produce more sebum that causes acne. Oral Contraceptives should be taken only under medical supervision. Spironolactone- Spironolactone is a steroid. It is prescribed along with oral contraceptives to women. Spironolactone controls the production of Androgens- a group of hormones. Androgens are responsible for overactive sebaceous glands. By controlling androgens, the sebum production is reduced and acne is treated. This article is only for informative purposes.
There are a plethora of acne medications currently on the market. Some of these are prescription medications, such as accutane. Others are over the counter chemical compounds, such as benzoyl peroxide. There are even herbal based acne medications, such as tea tree oil. However, many of them are not as effective as advertised.
Part of the problem with finding the right acne medication is that there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to acne. Different people respond differently to the various medications and treatments. However, there are several acne medications that have been clinically proven to be effective in treating acne, and these are the medications that will stop acne for most people.
Prescription Acne Treatments
Of the prescription medications, Accutane is one of the best. It is a chemical derivative of vitamin A, and is often referred to as the “miracle drug” for acne. Accutane is most effective in the treatment of severe cystic acne, and not to be taken lightly. For some people, the many side effects can be worse than the acne itself. However, this is one treatment that works.
Retin A and Renova are also prescription medications. These are topical derivatives of vitamin A, and are also good at clearing up fine lines, wrinkles, and slight skin discolorations. One of the biggest downsides is sunlight and other topical acne treatments must be avoided while using either of them. However, they are proven to reduce acne.
Birth control pills and antibiotics round out the acne medications most commonly prescribed. Birth control pills are used exclusively by women to help regulate hormones, and therefore lessen the hormonally related acne that many women experience. Antibiotics work by attacking the acne causing p.bateria as it grows deep in skin pores.
Over the Counter Acne Treatments
There are some over the counter acne treatments that work well. The two best are benzoyl peroxide, and salicylic acid.
Benzoyl peroxide works by penetrating the skin pores, and eliminating the acne causing bacteria that grows deep in the skin. Benzoyl peroxide is the most commonly used acne treatment because it is affordable, easily available, and nearly as effective as most prescription medication.
Salicylic acid works by removing the top layers of dead skin cells. This helps the skin renew itself faster, and decreases the chance for pore blockage and a subsequent acne breakout.
Herbal Acne Treatments
The vast majority of acne treatments fall under the heading of “herbal” acne treatments. The reason is because of the lack or regulation for herbal products. This can be very frustrating to the general consumer, because it is impossible to tell which herbal treatment will work to stop acne, and which ones will do very little at all.
Of every herbal treatment available, there are only 2 that are currently proven to stop acne. Tea tree oil will help get rid of acne, and so will green tea cream.
Tea tree oil is an oil derived from one tea tree plant that is unique to Australia. For several hundred years it was touted as a cure all, until penicillin was introduced to fight bacteria. However, tea tree oil has seen a recent revival due in part to study conducted in 1990 that proved it is as effective in treating acne as 5% benzoyl peroxide. Furthermore, it had none of the side effects that benzoyl peroxide does.
Green tea cream has been validated more recently, at the 2003 American Academy of Dermatology conference. It was proven that green tea is as effective in treating acne as a 4% benzoyl peroxide solution. Though the study has not been corroborated yet, it demonstrated that there is another herbal treatment besides tea tree oil.
These are some of the acne medications proven to work. For those who are experiencing acne, any of the aforementioned treatments would be well worth trying.
