Find Relief From Skin Disorders

Author: Angelo Johnson
Source: isnare.com

Skin disorders can change the way a person looks and the way a person looks at themselves. It can be very upsetting and stressful to have a skin disorder. A skin disorder can occur not only on the face but on the rest of the body as well. Some of the most common skin disorders are Rosacea, Psoriasis, Eczema, and Acne.

Rosacea is an inflammatory skin condition that causes redness in the face. It produces small red, pus filled bumps or pimples. Rosacea does not have a cure but if left untreated it can progress. Treatments can control and reduce symptoms. Some symptoms include red areas on the face, bumps, bulbous nose, visible small blood vessels, feelings of being flush, and burning of the eyes.

The causes are not known for Rosacea. But there are factors that can irritate and make it worse. It does so by increasing the blood flow to the surface of your skin. Hot foods, spicy foods, and alcohol can all make it worse. Things like temperature extremes, sunlight, hot bath, saunas, and strenuous exercise can all factor in rising blood flow to the surface of your skin. Taking corticosteroids or other drugs that dilate blood vessels like blood pressure medication can tend to make Rosacea worse as well.

Psoriasis is an inflammatory and proliferate skin disease known for sharply demarcated, dull red, and scaly plagues. Plagues or red skin are often covered with silvery scales of dead skin and can be itchy and painful. They can crack and bleed or the plagues will grow and merge into each other covering very large areas. Fingernails and toes nails can get discolored and begin to crumble or detach from nail bed. Plagues or scales or crust on the top of head can happen too.

Psoriasis can lead to psoriatic arthritis; about 30 % of people who have psoriasis end up with it. Psoriasis tends to run in families and may skip generations. Anything from emotional stress, dry skin, and streptococcal infection can trigger an episode. There is no cure for this condition either but treatments will help reduce episodes and prevent them.

Eczema is a skin condition in which the skin is red, irritated, and occasionally there are small red bumps that are fluid filled and ooze. The most common cause is dermatitis. Most people who have Eczema have family members who have hay fever, asthma, or other severe allergies. It may have to do with genetics. Most people who have Eczema end up themselves getting hay fever or asthma. Eczema is not an allergy but it is triggered by allergies. Also things like excessive heat and stress can trigger it too.

Again, there is no cure for Eczema. Because certain things can trigger a break out avoiding those things can prevent or improve a break out. Avoiding allergens like mold, pollen, dust, animal dander will prevent and allergy related Eczema break out. Keeping dry skin in the winter moist and not using harsh soaps and detergents on skin can prevent break outs. Sweating, tobacco smoke, and some acidic foods like tomatoes or even alcohol can make things worse too. And lastly of course this goes for any skin condition, avoiding the tendency to scratch a break out or episode can help it heal faster and not irritate it anymore than it is.

Most sufferers of Rosacea, Psoriasis, and Eczema are very familiar with many products that can exfoliate dry, dead skin cells but leave the skin with ugly red patches and irritated more. These products also are greasy, and smelly ingredients like tar or zinc. Prescription products contain cortisone or steroids and can have a negative affect on the body.

Alternative Health Supplements offers a product that is all natural and safe to use. Dermasolve by L’Avenir is specifically designed to treat Rosacea, Psoriasis, and Eczema. It is fragrance free and dermatologist tested. It is also safe to use on children as young as 6 years old. It can be used anywhere on the body even the scalp. This product is not a cure for skin conditions but it will help aid in the healing and prevent chronic skin conditions from reoccurring.

5 Useful Tips – Discover the Best Treatment For Acne

Author: Riley Andrews
Source: ezinearticles.com

Before we discuss the proper treatment for acne, we need to study how acne is created in the first place, so that we stop it before it has a chance to begin.

The Skin creates Sebum, which is oil secreted naturally in the hair follicles. It gets into the pores, where it provides lubrication and protection for the skin. Occasionally, too much sebum is trapped in the hair follicle. A blackhead or a whitehead results from a clogged pore. These pores allow the overgrowth of Propionibacterium, which causes the surrounding skin to form acne, this occurs when these bacteria inflame the hair follicle. This is the time to begin acne treatment.

Acne control:

A diet rich in seeds, nuts, fresh fruits and vegetables can help control acne. Drink enough water every day because, dehydrated skin can shed dead cells causing clogged pores. Most cosmetics contain chemicals that can aggravate acne. Use products that will not cause blackheads. Avoid stress, which lowers the hormones, which can increase the hormone level. Some milk products, red meat and fried foods may exaggerate acne. Tanning excessively and use of sun tan products can lead to blocked pores.

Listed below are some guidelines recommended by The American Academy of Dermatology to help you treat acne:

* Never squeeze or touch the acne pustules in any way. This can worsen the inflammatory process.

* Gently wash your face twice daily with a mild soap or one that contains sulfur. Gently, pat skin dry.

* Do not use oil- based products.

* Fried foods and even grease in the air often in take-out restaurants can irritate acne.

* Give acne products time to clear up the lesions. This can mean several weeks or even months.

* Some acne products increase the skin’s sensitivity to light. Wear a hat with a brim while in the sun and use sunscreen. Avoid tanning booths while using these products.

Treatment for Acne- Acne Cleansers

Acne Cleansers act as the first line of defense in the treatment for acne. They remove dirt and dead cells from the the skin, control oil accumulation, and remove beauty products such as make-up. There are a variety of skin cleansers, always use milder cleansers as a substitute for bathing soap. Most of the cleansers, some of which are shown below, are medicated and are excellent for various acne treatments.

1. PhytoMe: Gentle Cleansing Gel:
Ingredients include herbal extracts that remove dead skin cells, bacteria and excess sebum from the skin surface. Use it three times daily as a cleanser or make-up remover and gives a refreshed, clean feeling to your face.

2. Clarins One-Step Facial Cleanser:
This cleanser uses orange extract. It opens pores and keeps the skin cleaned and nourished, and is great for oily skin. It is an all-natural cleanser, toner and make-up remover.

3. Face Stockholm Foaming Facial Cleanser:

5. Fira Foaming Tea Tree Facial Cleanser:
Tea tree oil has natural ingredients for controlling skin problems and bacteria. The penetrating action of the foam deep cleanses the skin, leaving it fresh and refreshed, with a better tone.

Use Essential Fatty Acid To Help You Prevent Or Eliminate Your Acne

Author: Rudy Silva
Source: isnare.com

To eliminate or clear your face of acne it will require you take a variety of health steps. The use of essential fatty acids is but one step. I have identified 10 different steps but will only discuss one step in this article – using essential fatty acids.

Getting sufficient essential fatty acids is of prime importance in clearing acne. It’s these fatty acids that help to control the production of excess androgens – the hormones that surge during the teen-age times It is androgens, which causes excess sebum oil to clog your hair follicle and contribute to creating your acne.

The three fatty acids you need to get daily are:

ทomega-3

ทomega-6

ทomega-9

When you are deficient in these essential fatty acids, you will have,

ทA weaken immune system

ทInflammatory disorders

ทPoor skin

ทSkin eruptions and other wounds that won’t heal

ทSebum production increases (this is what happens

when you have acne)

ทSebaceous glands size increases

Eating essential oils are necessary to provide you the right oils that are used in the sebaceous glands. These oils can come from straight vegetable oils or from oils in specific foods such as nuts and seeds.

Here’s what you need to do. Use flax seed oil (omega-3 oil) and olive oil (omega-6 oil) in your salad. These are the best oils to eat and are called polyunsaturated fatty acids.

The other oil that is even better for you is called monounsaturated fatty acid or omega-9. This oil is found in avocados and somewhat in olive oil.

Most diets people have contain an excess of omega-6 oil (olive oil), so mostly likely you need to concentrate on getting more omega-3 oil (flax seed oil) into your diet.

You can get omega-3 oil from,

ทavocados

ทsesame seeds

ทpumpkin seeds

ทwalnuts

ทdark leafy green vegetables (spinach, mustard greens, kale)

ทwheat germ oil

ทsalmon

ทsardines

ทalbacore tuna

Or, you can take one to two tablespoon of flax seed oil, omega-3 oil, each day. This will give you the amount of omega-3 oil that your body needs. You can add this oil to your morning cereal, soups, smoothies, salads and other liquid foods.

You can get omega-6 oil from,

ทolive oil

ทflaxseed oil

ทflaxseeds

ทgrape seed oil

ทpistachio nuts

ทolives

ทsunflower seeds

ทchicken

ทevening primrose oil

ทpumpkin seeds

ทpine nuts

Taking 2-3 tablespoons of omega-6 oil a day will give you the amount of this oil that you body needs.

So, to control those androgens and help your body reduce the production of acne or pimples start using more essential fatty acids.

Zinc, Glutathione, and Acne

Author: Robert Rister
Source: ezinearticles.com

Several clinical studies report that zinc is only slightly less effective than antibiotics in controlling acne (although antibiotics by themselves seldom are adequate treatment). The key to using zinc effectively is buying the right kind of zinc. Researchers using an effervescent (fizzy) form of zinc sulfate found it to be about as effective as the antibiotic tetracycline. Researchers using a plain form of zinc sulfate found that it appeared to have a somewhat beneficial effect on pustules but not on blackheads, white heads, nodules, or cysts.

The most recent clinical study found that acne patients given a moderate dose of zinc gluconate (30 mg) per day were about half as likely to be completely cured after 90 days as those given the minocycline. Among patients who did not achieve total remission, however, zinc treatment eliminated over 90 percent as many lesions as treatment with the antibiotic after 30 days and over 80 percent as many lesions as the antibiotic after 90 days.

The bottom line of these studies is, if you have acne, take zinc and be prepared to wait a couple of months for results. The best-absorbed form of zinc is zinc picolinate. Do not take more than 50 mg of any zinc supplement daily. In rare cases, excessive intake of zinc depletes copper to cause anemia, that is, a deficiency of red blood cells, and neutropenia, a serious deficiency of white blood cells. If you take tetracycline antibiotics for skin infections, chances are you are deficient in zinc. Taking tetracycline interferes with the body’s absorption of zinc (and taking zinc interferes with the body’s absorption of tetracycline).

One other supplement is helpful if you exercise and you have acne. Aerobic exercise helps acne by increasing circulation to the skin, but anaerobic exercise (huffing and puffing to the point of exhaustion) without antioxidant supplementation may aggravate acne. Strenuous exercise depletes glutathione. This naturally occurring antioxidant slows inflammatory reactions and is essential to the normal function of estrogen and testosterone. Laboratory studies with animals have found that supplementation with alpha-lipoic acid keeps glutathione from breaking down, especially in the liver and in the bloodstream.

Causes Of Thyroid Nodules

Author: Bond Mejeh
Source: articlesbase.com

The thyroid gland consists of two lobes that look similar to the wings of a butterfly. The thyroid is able to absorb iodine from food you consume. It is the only gland in your body that can do this. Your thyroid takes the iodine and uses it to produce two main hormones, triiodothyronine also known as T3 and thyroxine known as T4. These are the hormones that regulate the rate that your body uses carbohydrates and lipids or fats. The thyroid also helps control body temperature, heart rate, as well as the creation of proteins. Calcitonin, yet another hormone the thyroid manufactures, is a hormone that regulates calcium level in the blood. Though we have no definitive knowledge as to the cause of most nodules and their onset, it has been found that there a certain factor that are associated with the onset. The list includes: -Low amount of iodine in the diet -Hashimoto’s disease, associated with hypothyroidism -Genetic defect in the receptors responsible for releasing TSH or thyroid-stimulating hormone -Radiation treatments that were undergone at an early age such as in child hood to the head or neck area Various Nodule Types There are different types of nodules that may develop in the thyroid gland: Colloid nodule – The type of nodule is noncancerous or benign. It manifests itself as an overgrowth of normal thyroid tissue. It is possible to have one colloid nodule or several. Though it is possible for these nodules to become larger in size, they do not spread to other parts of the body and are contained only in they thyroid gland. Follicular adenoma – This nodule type is also noncancerous or benign. Thyroid cyst – These can be benign or malignant depending. These are fluid-filled areas of the thyroid glands that can differ in size. They can measure from less than 1/3 of an inch in diameter to over one 1 inch. Thyroid cysts are usually filled with fluid. Some thyroid cysts have solid components. These are called complex cysts. Fluid-filled cysts are generally benign. Complex cysts can at times be malignant. Inflammatory nodule – This nodule type may at times develop resulting from chronic inflammation of the thyroid. This condition is called thyroiditis. There is a rare form of thyroiditis called subacute thyroiditis, which is accompanied by severe pain within the thyroid gland. There are other types of thyroiditis that are painless and sometimes happen after pregnancy. This is called postpartum thyroiditis. Thyroid cancer – There is only a small chance that nodules are cancerous if a physician determines that you have any. If you have a family history of thyroid cancer or any endocrine cancer, you will be at higher risk. Also, if you are a man younger than 30 years of age or older than 60 years of age, with a history of head or neck radiation, you would also be at risk. Cancerous nodules are generally large in size and firm to the touch often causing neck discomfort and/or pain. Multinodular goiter – “Goiter” refers to any enlargement in the thyroid gland. The appearance of several nodules can lead to a goiter. This is referred to as multinodular goiter. This condition causes tightness in the throat accompanied by difficulty in swallowing and breathing. Hyperfunctioning thyroid nodule (toxic adenoma, toxic multinodular goiter, Plummer’s disease) – TSH is released by the pituitary gland, which regulates the production of thyroid hormones. Hyperfunctioning thyroid nodules that become larger and actually produce thyroid hormones separate from the influence of TSH or thyroid-stimulating hormone. Hyperfunctioning thyroid nodules create a situation where there are high blood levels of thyroxine accompanied by low or even nonexistent levels of TSH. A genetic defect of TSH receptors may be a reason for overactivity of nodules. The Risk Factors Thyroid nodules are quite common. In fact, up to 50% of people may have one. The exact cause of thyroid nodules is still unknown although there are some factors that seem to increase the risk of having one. This includes: Heredity – Family history such as the existence of nodules in parents or in siblings tends to put an individual at a higher risk of developing nodules. Age – The chances of developing thyroid nodules grow higher as you increase in age. Changes may happen in your thyroid as part of the aging process. Gender – Statistically, women are more likely to develop thyroid nodules when compared to men. Exposure to radiation – In the 1940s and 50s, many persons were often treated with radiation for conditions that were noncancerous such as in the case of acne or enlarged tonsils. If you, as a child, experience this type of treatment or experienced any therapy employing the use of radiation to your neck or head for the conditions mentioned above, then you have a higher risk of developing thyroid nodules. You would also be at a higher risk if you were exposed to radioactive particles that became airborne during any atomic weapons testing or if you were exposed to radiation resulting from a nuclear power plant accident. Specific thyroid conditions – If you’ve had thyroiditis or a chronic inflammation of the thyroid gland, this would also put you at higher risk. What Are The Complications? In general, thyroid nodules are non-cancerous or benign, but at times, they can lead to serious problems. Larger nodules or a number of nodules appearing together can lead to multinodular goiter. This condition can interfere with swallowing or breathing. In can become even more of a serious problem when these nodules or goiter produces thyroid hormone, which can lead to hyperthyroidism. Along with assorted symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, muscle fatigue, intolerance to heat, and high anxiety, hyperthyroidism can lead to other complications: Heart-related complications – This type of complication includes a rapid heartbeat, heart rhythm disorder and even congestive heart failure. Congestive heart failure is the condition of the heart being no longer strong enough to circulate blood throughout the body. Osteoporosis – This is when your bones become weak and brittle due to a lack of calcium. The overall health of bones depends to a certain extent on the amount of calcium and minerals found in them. An excess of thyroid hormone or hyperthyroidism, can disrupt the incorporation of calcium into the bones. In the situation where a patient develops hyperthyroidism, the bones are the first to display the sign or symptoms of the disorder before anything else. This is the case with postmenopausal women who are in the group of individuals with a high risk of developing osteoporosis. Thyrotoxic crisis – This is the term used to describe the sudden and possibly life threatening intensify of the above signs and symptoms. This requires immediate medical care should this occur.

Petroleum Jelly – Facts Not Fiction

Author: Muslim Shahid
Source: ezinearticles.com

Myth: Petroleum jelly (Vaseline) used in hair and skin products is a dangerous chemical byproduct of petroleum or gasoline.

Fact: Refined USP Petroleum jelly is not the same as the “Petrolatum” defined by the Chemical Abstract System (CAS) definition found in the EPA Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) Inventory. This CAS number (8009-03-8) applies to an unrefined, heavy, waxy petrolatum material. In fact, United States Pharmacopeia (USP) white petroleum jelly is not a byproduct but is a refined and purified product of heavy waxes and paraffinic oils. USP White Petroleum Jelly surpasses the safety standards set by the FDA for use in food and cosmetics products as well as for both the European Union (EU) and Japanese Pharmacopeia Chemical Codes.

Myth: Vaseline or mineral oil when applied to the skin creates an impassible barrier plugging hair and skin pores (comedogenic).

Fact: There are no credible scientific studies that prove that Vaseline or mineral oil is in fact comedogenic (block skin pores). In reality, the term comedogenic was developed by the FDA to only classify substances that caused acne by blocking facial skin pores. Later, health and nutritional advocates attempted to extend this definition to include products used for the hair and body. However, the term “comedogenic” was never intended to be used beyond the original scope as defined by the FDA. Recently, new scientific studies have resolved the debate. Technical papers published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (May 24, 2005) and the Journal of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists (1996, vol. 47, pp. 41-48) demonstrated that white USP mineral oil (FG) and white USP Vaseline do not block skin pores.

PJ and mineral are classified as “occlusive” moisturizers. In theory, occlusives reduce water loss from the skin by creating a hydrophobic barrier when applied over the skin. Occlusive moisturizers diffuse into the intercellular lipid domains and herein lay their effectiveness. Published studies show that although Vaseline exhibits what appears to be occlusive properties when applied to the skin it neither forms nor acts as an impermeable barrier but rather permeates slowly throughout the SC interstices, allowing for normal skin recovery.

In layman’s term Vaseline PJ does not clog skin pores but slowly diffuses throughout the skin lipid layer and even assists the body in skin repair.

Myth: PJ is inexpensive poor moisturizer.

Fact: True, White USP PJ is an inexpensive product but on the contrary it is still the most cost-effective moisturizer used today in the cosmetic industry. Petroleum jelly at minimum concentrations reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL) by more than 98% and is followed by lanolin, mineral oil, and the silicones, which are effective in the range from 20%-30%. Other substances such as beeswax, stearic acid, shea butter, jojoba oil, coconut oil, and sunflower seed oil TEWL values are below twenty percent.
